DB's Celebrity Golfer Cavalcade, starring Charles Barkley
It's the slow season, so here at Devil Ball we're looking at more than just the PGA Tour. That's right, there is golf beyond Tiger! (Not much, but still.) And today, we kick off DB's Celebrity Golfer Cavalcade with the most famous non-golfing golfer alive. Ladies and gentlemen, cover your heads and hide your children; Charles Barkley is on the tee.
His deal: Barkley is an NBA Hall of Famer, the onetime "Round Mound of Rebound" who's now an analyst for TNT. He's one of the most outspoken athletes ever, and also one of the funniest. Oh, and he's often seen these days carving up the most exclusive golf courses of America.
Handicap: Infinite.
Breakdown of his game: Barkley is just an awful golfer. (I'd say "turrible," but that's already gone beyond hack.) Seriously, he seems to have no idea what he's doing out there, particularly when he's at the tee. He yanks back his driver like he's pulling it out of a pot of taffy, holds it above his head for a long second, then ducks down and swings at the ball like he's trying to beat a squirrel to death. I'm serious, it's unbelievable.
On the other hand, you'll never ever find a better member in your foursome. So he's got that going for him.
Tour prospects: For a golfer, Barkley's a great announcer. Or basketball player. Or competitive eater. Or anything but a golfer.
