>GEORGE TOWN: A Barisan Nasional (BN) state assemblyman has told Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to stop referring to Caliph Umar Abdul Aziz as his model leader as this has made Muslims uneasy.

Shahabudin Yahya (Permatang Berangan) said Lim should model himself after non-Muslim leaders.

"He is not a Muslim, and he shouldn't say he is emulating him. He should not use it as political mileage as Muslims are getting upset that he is comparing his leadership to that of the Caliph," Shahabudin said in his winding-up speech at the state legislative assembly.

He said while Lim was free to participate in the religious festivities of other creeds, he should refrain from portraying himself on the same spiritual level as the Caliph.

"He has so many other leaders whom he can emulate — Abraham Lincoln, Confucius or even Nelson Mandela, but the Caliph is a Muslim and a very spiritual person.

"He should never equate himself to that spirituality, as he cannot be on the same level as the Caliph. There is a vast difference between the two of them," Shahabudin said.

He said Lim also made Muslims throughout the country uneasy by often quoting the statement "amar maarof nahi mungkar" ("espouse good, abhor evil") in his political speeches.

"Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng (DAP-Air Putih) questioned former Islamic Religious Council committee chairman Datuk Shahabudin Yahya (BN-Permatang Berangan) if it was a crime for him to emulate Caliph Umar Abdul Aziz. Saying that he never equated himself to the Caliph, Lim said he only wanted to emulate the values practiced by the Caliph.

"Why can't I learn from the noble values, faith and personality of the Caliph? Don't tell me I should learn these values from Umno leaders?

"All religions teach good values and they would be happy if one wants to adopt values and teachings of their religion.

"Only Umno would advocate otherwise, that it is wrong to learn noble values from other religions," Lim added.

The state government adopted the competency, accountability and transparency (CAT) principles which is in line with the "amar makruf, nahi mungkar" (doing good while abhorring evil) principle.

"We do make mistakes in our process of learning but we are ready to admit our mistakes, unlike Umno and BN leaders who refuse to repent," Lim added. "
